3D to 2D

Purple lights inside of propellor head

Masked Identity

The inspiration behind my masked identity was boat propellors. I am fascinated by the curves and dimension and dynamics of boat propellors. I always grew up visiting my Mom's parents in Florida. They loved boats and one of my fondest memories was going out on the boat on hot summer days. I attribute my drive to come to Florida for college entirely to the vacations visiting my grandparents. I feel as though this love for boating does not radiate from my actions it is a huge part of my life.

It's About Time

For this project I chose to create a carving of a panda out of soap. I chose a panda because they are one of my favorite animals. I started from the top carving the curve of the back, and then forming blocks of where the limbs and face were to be. I was hesitant at first to take away too much, but as the form started to unfold I grew braver and began to trust me carving strokes far more.

I ran my panda under water for a few minutes, used it as soap, and

I put it in the microwave for a minute. It caused the soap to puff up three times its original size and crumble. I continued to crumble it more and add red acrylic paint all over it. Then I added mod podge and molded it all together into a ball using plastic wrap. I then added coral nail polish and glitter. I added heat from a blow dryer as well as some rubber cement on the outside which effected the color and texture change.

Paper Stacking

The objective of the fruit portion of this project was to stack paper and create a the silhouette of the fruit. I did so for an apple. It was far more difficult than I had anticipated. I realized how hard it is to make a silhouette out of imperfect curves and shapes. My final solution was sanded down to create finer lines.

For my innovative paper stacking project I folded stacked papers into book-like shapes and stacked those on top of one another. The folding and stacking created a book feeling. I built them up like a trophy and spray painted them an antique looking gold. The inspiration for my project came from how society puts such a high emphasis on knowledge and memorization.

Memento

The memento I created using the three materials of wood, brown ink, and orange ink, was a representation of my grandparents house. Each aspect of the memento had a meaning. The object itself was a stair case but this was a summary of various aspects of their house. Although there was no wooden stair case, there was lots of brown in the design and feel of the house; dark wood paneling, and a brown corduroy couch. the grain texture of the wood of the staircase memento along with the mixture of inks created a surface reminiscent of corduroy. The hole drilled in the staircase memento was also representative of a bullet hole in one of their windows. I wanted an antique looking item reminiscent of the dark musky feeling Demurest, New Jersey household.

My Inspirations

Gregors Room

Dark brown
Furry but hard insect legs
Large bug man
Gross
Cruel family behavior
Gross
Gray
Dirty
Empty space
Swift, scurrying
Grimy
Sad, lonely, depressing

I find it crazy how immediately consumed he is by his routine. Although in the beginning his body has clearly undergone a huge transformation it seems less concerning than getting ready for work. Then as his venture to the door is described it sounds so strenuous, uncomfortable, and disgusting. The family even though they were completely supported by Gregor is entirely unsympathetic to his situation and casts him out.

Arbitrary: based on random choice or personal whim, rather than reason or system
Concede: admit to something that is true or valid after first denying it or resisting it
Fretwork: ornamental design in wood, typically open work with a fretsaw
Premonition: a strong feeling that something is going to happen
Amelioration: make something bad or unsatisfactory better

In my creation of Gregors room I used antique sepia colors because that is how I saw his room. I saw it aged and classic. I gave Gregor a hat and tie to represent his perpetual working. Although Gregor had legs in the story I chose to make him legless to represent his helplessness.
